In this writer's humble opinion, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 fits the bill.

There are many, many digital cameras on the market, and technology is advancing at such a rapid rate that it is very difficult to keep up. Each camera manufacturer makes claims of excellence or features about every new camera release to lure you, the buyer, into a purchase. And how does a camera become king of the hill and make it to the top of the camera heap anyway?

It starts with a reputation. Certain manufacturers have been able to maintain a good reputation for producing excellent cameras. We buyers tend to trust a manufacturer if we have had a good experience with them.

Then there are the camera review geeks. These are camera "experts" who look at each new release and put them through a series of standard tests to compare them to other cameras of similar design. These online web sites such as DPReview.com, StevesDigicams.com, and Imaging-Resources.com have become will known and trusted for their honest opinions and ratings. Manufacturers send their newest releases to those who have gained good standing in the online camera community.

Finally, there are the buyers - those who actually buy the cameras and use them, not necessarily analyzing how each pixel is rendered on a print, but deciding if the camera meets the individual's expectations. These evaluations are extremely useful in making a camera buying decision.

Before buying your next camera, be sure to check online stores where the camera has been sold. Some very useful sites to check include Amazon.com, B&H Photo, and Adorama.com. Enter the name of the camera you are interested in, then click on the user comments.

All of this leads up to how the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 gets the rating as "Best Compact Digital Camera Over All". How to Choose Your First DSLR

If you're like many recent amateur photographers, you interest in photography may have been sparked by a point and shoot digital camera. Maybe you realized you liked to take pictures when handed the camera. You probably started realizing that you took picture taking more seriously than other people. You started paying attention to composition, color, and contrast. Eventually, you picked up a book on photography, and began to learn the technical aspects.

Once this happened, you probably learned what an SLR is and why they are so great. You're now ready to buy your first digital SLR, but are unsure of what to look at. For this article, I'm going to discuss some of the entry level options, and compare them to help you out with the decision making process.

To keep things simple, I'm going to stick with the two biggest brands of DSLRs, Canon and Nikon. There are other worthy contenders out there, but I really prefer sticking with Canon and Nikon due to the broad support you can get with them. Professionals all over the world use these systems, so support and accessories are always available.

Let's start with Canon. Canon offers an entry level series of cameras known as the Digital Rebel series. These are very popular cameras. They are compatible with all Canon autofocus lenses, and offer high resolution and good image quality for the money. Definitely an option to check out.

Nikon offers several lower end cameras, all based on the D40 body. These cameras are generally considered to have better ergonomics than Canon. I myself think they also look a little more professional than the wildly styled Rebel series. One disadvantage of these lower end Nikon models is that they cannot use all Nikon autofocus lens. They can only use lenses with the motor built into the lens. These are common and popular, but its something to think about.

When it comes to choosing between these two systems, you can't go too wrong. Remember that when you're buying an SLR, you're really buying into the system, and Canon and Nikon systems are both world class. The best way to choose is to try out each camera and see which one feels better to you. See if the controls feel intuitive or not. This will go a long way towards your satisfaction with the camera.

Overall, though, you really can't go wrong with any digital SLR if you're coming from the point and shoot world. SLRs are loads of fun, and offer amazing control over the image. If you're a serious amateur, you definitely need to be looking into these as soon as possible.

When someone asks me what the best new digital camera is, I always have to pause a little. The reason I pause, is to ask myself a few questions about the person asking the question. The first assumption I may make, is that your not a serious camera buff. Your just looking for a camera that's easy to use. Since your a pretty active player on the move, I'm also going to assume you want something you can just jam into your tight blue jeans pocket, or drop into the bottom of your kit bag / purse and forget about until needed. You probably like sharing pics and videos with your FaceBook and MySpace pals on Flickr or YouTube. The Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph, or the Sony Cybershot DSCW55 would be good choices for you. If your the real rugged outdoorsy type, I might change my pick to the Olympus Stylus 790SW for its toughness and all-weatherproof design.

But, maybe your more of a casual photographer, that only pulls out the camera for special occasions and vacation. Tight blue jeans aren't much of an issue anymore, so you don't mind a little extra bulk . . . in the camera I mean. Something easy to use, with better image and video quality then your cell phones camera are a priority. Serious photo editing using RAW files are often part of the SLR photography world. The Canon Digital Rebel XTi or the Nikon D40 are good starters around $600 in this category. If you seem like the passionately intense type, and have an endless pocket book, you may as well just knock your self out, and get the Canon EOS 5D ($2000 + lenses). I used to be a big fan of simple digital cameras, but as I took my photography further and further, I found the need for an SLR. I read many reviews, and found two cameras which are probably two of the best SLR digital cameras nowadays; the Sony A300 and the Nikon D60.

The A300 by Sony is priced quite reasonably and comes with a number of great features. Some of these features include auto-focus as well as image stabilization that is built in the camera, thus it does not depend on the lens. The cameras LCD screen also offers live preview for users, something that the D60 does not offer. This is quite a big advantage the A300 has over other SLR cameras because you generally do not find live preview on SLR cameras. The camera also offers many more focus points, even more than the D60. Nonetheless, the D60 does have its advantages. After going stores and trying out both of these cameras next to one another, I went with the D60. There are many reasons as to why I picked it. First of all, the D60 is much more compact, and lighter in comparison to the A300. The lens was also much more appealing and comfortable to my eyes than the Nikon. The LCD menu was much easier for users to navigate through which was a big plus. The last major reason was that there are many more lenses available for the D60. When picking a DSLR camera, you must consider whether you will want to buy new lenses in the future. Many lenses do not fit certain cameras. This is why I chose the D60, aside the fact that Nikon is much better known for its cameras then Sony.

I eventually ordered my D60 via Amazon, which was a great choice on my part. Amazon allows you to get credit (yes, money) within 30 days. If the item you bought goes down in value within 30 days of your purchase, you will be credited. As well know, the prices of cameras are always going down, so in the end, I won! As for my personal experience with the D60 so far, it is great. I am not the only one, and I have many friends who have it and love it to. It is a very comfortable camera, very easy to use, especially for beginners. The only problem is that it clearly will not fit in my pocket like my old digital camera. Nonetheless, it is not nearly as big as I thought which is great. The lens has vibration reduction which I find is very useful. Often times my friends use my camera, and I always here this exact line; "I want to buy one"! This is filled with an aptly named range of 'bridge' cameras which resemble the more complex DSLR cameras despite being closer to the simpler, instant point and shoot cameras. They have non-removable lenses, different internal workings and often have smaller sensors. All this in theory suggests they are weaker than entry level DSLR cameras but this isn't strictly the case. More often than not, the lens found on bridge cameras is superior in quality to kit lenses supplied with DSLR cameras. The quality of the lens is a huge factor to consider when trying to achieve good quality images.

Finally there are digital single lens reflex cameras (DSLR). These cameras tend to encompass all features found on the simpler as well as having full manual controls. These cameras tend to be more expensive and as a rule come with a poor standard lens. The main plus for these cameras is the expandability that can be achieved through changing the lenses and adding accessories to hep you take the best photographs possible. The main downsides are the costs involved for both the main body of the camera and for additional lenses and the bulky nature of them. It is also worth considering that removable lenses on DSLR cameras usually only fit one brand of camera so if you choose a Sony DSLR as your first camera and purchase lenses you will be locked into buying further Sony DSLR cameras in the future if you want to use your existing kit.

So which camera? It is best not to get caught up with the megapixel war as often this is almost irrelevant - it is accepted that five megapixels is all you would need to blow pictures up to A4 size! What is worth considering is what you want from the camera, how you want your hobby to evolve and what you feel most comfortable with. Price is a factor, however high end instant cameras and bridge cameras are easily in the range of entry level DSLRs.

Personally speaking I opted for an entry DSLR (the Sony a200) and I love it. The entry level lens is below the quality you find in bridge cameras of similar price, but I plan on using a range of lenses as my hobby develops to take specialist shots. However, if I was going to spend the majority of my time taking pictures of scenery or people from standard distances without getting too arty I would have chosen a bridge camera with the single, better quality lens and further if I wanted to carry the camera with me and take drunken pictures I would have gone for the most compact option in the form of an instant camera.

Do research, read as many reviews as you can and ask people who enjoy photography what they think just be wary that they might well be biased and only be willing to suggest equipment made by the same manufacturer as they use. Once you know which cameras appeal to you most try and get into a shop and play about with them. Feel the quality of the finish and use the controls and see if you feel comfortable with them. I had my heart set on a Nikon D40 until I had a chance to play with one alongside the Sony A200.

Overall take your time, have a play with cameras that are on your short list and consider what you actually want from a camera. Most cameras are capable of taking beautiful pictures suitable for most purposes. You need to select the hardware that matches all your criteria be it a DSLR, a bridge or an instant camera.

For most people, making the decision to invest in a digital SLR camera is not something that can be taken lightly. The cost of a DSLR can be a lot more than a simple point-and-shoot camera, especially if you intend to purchase additional lenses and other accessories. However, if you love taking photos and would like to extend your skills, buying a good entry-level digital SLR camera will surely be worth every cent that you spend as you'll be able to experiment with more advanced techniques and produce beautiful photos that you can keep forever.

This digital SLR comparison between three of the current most popular entry-level cameras should help you to decide which camera is best for you. The three DSLRs I'll be comparing are:

-Canon EOS 1000D
-Nikon D60
-Sony DSLR-A200

These are all great entry-level cameras in my opinion, but they all have different pros and cons. The cheapest of the three is the Sony DSLR-A200 which can be found for as cheap as $400. The Canon EOS 1000D and the Nikon D60 are both currently about $500, though prices can vary depending on where you look and whether you buy them as part of a package or not.

The Sony is the heaviest, weighing 532g, the Nikon is the second heaviest at 495g and the Canon weighs just 450g. Neither is necessarily better; it really comes down to your personal preference, so if you can you should try to hold the cameras in a shop to see if you prefer a heavier or lighter weight body.

The Sony and the Nikon both use CCD type sensors and have a 10.2 megapixel effective resolution. The Canon uses a CMOS type sensor and has a 10.1 megapixel effective resolution. There is some debate over which type of sensor is superior and both have their own advantages and disadvantages, however the distinctions are minimal and shouldn't make any noticeable difference to the average photographer.

Image stabilization is built into the body of the Sony camera, allowing you take sharper photos even if you're hands are a little shaky. The Canon and the Nikon both also offer image stabilization but it is built into their lenses instead. This may mean that you have to spend a bit more when you buy your camera's lenses if you want to have this feature included.

In order to achieve consistent exposure when taking photos, it's important to have a good range of ISO sensitivity. Those Canon commercials on the radio touting how easy it is to get shots like the professionals, if you buy a Rebel XTi have been effective, face it.So you've gone out and bought a digital single lens reflex camera. Now read the owner's manual from front to back. But really who wants to do that? Follow these tips if you're feeling overwhelmed by the thick manual. Here's what you should know to just "operate the camera." I say "operate" because you're not in total control and you are letting the camera do its thing for you.

Set the camera on auto. If there is full auto, do so. The idea here is to take some pictures to give you something to work with.

Download the images to your computer. There are usually 2 options for this although a 3rd one now exist which is quite spiffy but may not be for everyone.
First option requires you to install driver software on your computer and connect your camera via a cable (usually USB 2.0) The 2nd option using an external card reader is the one I recommend because it doesn't drain your camera's battery and your camera doesn't need to be tethered to your computer.This allows you to continue shooting if you have another memory card. Why wait around? Life is too short and those memory cards are so cheap now. Your 3rd option, if your camera uses the "sd" or secure digital type, involves buying a Wi-Fi enabled memory card. This special sd cards can transfer your images wirelessly to your computer through your WiFi network to your computer and then upload it to the numerous photo-sharing websites.

Format the memory card. When the card is full and after you've downloaded those images to your computer, this setting erases the images on the card and frees it up to be re-used again and again.
Once you've mastered steps 1,2 & 3, you're ready to be dangerous and proceed with reckless abundance. Jump around your owner's manual to figure out how to change these settings next

ISO. ISO refers to the sensitivity of the ccd or charged couple device. If you were a film shooter, this is like having the ability to change film speed in mid-roll.You might find yourself in poor light, so this is a must.

Shutter Speed and Aperture. Select aperture priority and set the lens aperture to f 5.6 .So long as you don't get some sort of protest from your camera, you should be fine. If the shutter speed drops below something you can't hand hold, some cameras will beep or kick in the built-in flash (assuming you have one on the top of the camera)
If you're shooting a moving subject, choose shutter priority and see if you can take a picture at 1/500 second. Again, if there is insufficient light, there's usually some indication. The focus point in my camera changes color from green to yellow as an indicator. Yours may have something similar.

White Balance. The default on the camera is automatic white balance. That works for 95% of the time. Since you've invested the money in a fancier camera, why not see what you've paid for? If you don't try changing the white balance manually, you will never know. Generally there is daylight, overcast, florescent, incandescent, auto and custom. The surest way to know is to test by taking the same subject under all the different lighting conditions and then open up the image on your computer. That little lcd (liquid crystal display) monitor on the camera is not a good gauge.

Compression. This is the setting or what is known as "quality" that the camera will record your images. Used to be more of an issue when memory cards were expensive. These days everyone has a drawer full of these cards because most folks never download their images like in the film days, they never developed that roll of film until they absolutely have to.The only difference is memory cards supposedly can store your images indefinitely without any degradation.Film because of its chemical nature deteriorates.

Auto focus sensor. By default most cameras have this "red" cursor centered. You want to be able to change this unless you want your subject to always be in the center.

So there you have it. Other features like auto bracketing and burst rate or continuous or predictive focusing are secondary. Those settings will be useful after you've mastered Tips 1 through 8.

Once you've made the decision, that a tiny point and shoot cameras simply aren't going to cut it for you any longer, you've probably started looking in to the world of cameras known as SLR. SLR stands for single lens reflex, and if you think that sounds confusing, you ain't seen nothin' yet. There's a whole jungle of tech terms you get to learn, if you proceed further down this path.

Well, depending on the kind of shopper your are, or how much information you like to digest before making a purchase, you can be in for quite a ride on your quest towards buying a digital SLR. It's my intention here, to help make that ride as painless as possible.

So, without much further adieu, let's dive right in. If your a fan of technology, your gonna love this stuff, as there is an almost limitless array of jargon, and technological advancements you can learn about with SLR cameras. That information should serve you well in making your final decision however. As, that same technology that has given the consumer a wonderful number of features, has also forced the manufacturers to be extremely competitive with one another. The result many a lot of very capable SLR cameras loaded with features at pretty affordable prices.

What I'm trying to say here, is that just about any SLR camera you end up buying will be a good one. That's not to say, that there aren't some lemons. If you stick with one of the major established brands, like Canon, Nikon, or Olympus your pretty much guaranteed to make a good choice. The Nikon D60, the Canon Rebel line (XT, XTi, XSi, T1i), or an Olympus Evolt E510 are all excellent choices. Considering you'll pay the same or less for one of those, that you would have paid for a basic point-and-shoot camera five years ago, is a testament to how far digital cameras have evolved.

Given the quality of all the top brands, the major differentiating factor between the final quality of your photographs has very little to do with the camera. That major factor is the person behind the shutter button. You, the photographer. Learning more about the art of what makes a good picture would be a good investment on your part. As well as spending some hands on time with the cameras your considering. Either borrow a friends camera, or sweet talk the sales clerk at your local photo shop into letting you take one home for a few days.

Taking a lot of practice shots, in diverse environments, will give you a pretty good idea of how much you like or dislike different cameras. Try taking pictures at parties, weddings, sporting events, sunsets, sunrises, or just around the house and neighbourhood for a few days.

Don't get overly hung up on technical specifications for each camera. A few extra megapixels here and there aren't going to make much difference. For a first time SLR buyer, as long as you get a good lens, with at least 8 or 10 megapixels, and a solidly constructed camera body, you'll be content.

If you really have a burning desire to delve deeper into specifications, tech jargon, and features, then go right ahead. I know that for some, that's just part of the fun of buying a camera, or any product. Just remember, in the long run, it's a lot more fun to be taking pictures than just reading about taking pictures.

Canon has hit a home run with the Canon Rebel T2i (aka 550D)!

The entry level digital SLR is getting rave reviews just about everywhere in the photography community. It is being applauded as the greatest sub-$1000 dslr camera now on the market.

What is all the hype about? Why is this little digital camera getting all the headlines in the photography community?

There is no official data to support this statement, but it seems that the set of features of the new Rebel is very much like another recent launch in the Canon line-up, the 7D, at roughly one-half the cost.

The price distinction is not unsubstantiated, but unless you are an extremely discerning professional, it would be tough to tell the distinction in photos and video relating to these two digital SLR cameras.

Pleasure from the total picture taking adventure is perhaps the most important motive for getting a new Canon Rebel T2i.. The convenience of using the controls to command your digital camera to get the exact picture you want. Is it depth of field you want to manage? Or do you want to get an award winning action shot of your kid's football game? All this is possible with a terrific digital SLR camera.

Somewhere, someone decided that there was a gap between the fairly inexpensive point and shoot automatic digital cameras, and the somewhat more sophisticated digital SLR cameras used by many professional photographers. That biggest feature separating the two cameras was lens zoom. Hence, was born the ultra zoom, or extended zoom digital cameras. They're a little bigger to carry around, but usually sport significantly improved lenses over the compact and ultra compact point and shoots. In addition, they don't require lugging around a case of supporting gear around, like many of the SLR cameras do.

Featuring upwards of 20X optical zoom, these are impressive cameras, and can be the perfect camera for certain situations. Like when you show up late for the wedding, and get stuck in the back pews. With these cameras you'll be able to still get great shots of the bride and grooms big kiss, without being mistaken for the official wedding photographer. As a general note for all these cameras, image stabilization is a gotta-have, unless you happen to have the rock steady hands of a surgeon.

Panasonic Lumix FZ28

This Panasonic model features an 18X zoom lens, and goes for around $350 or less. the IA (intelligent auto) setting works quite well. The auto settings are important for many photographers this camera targets as manual tweaking is generally not something a lot of casual photographers do. Of course, for those who like to make adjustments, the option is there. The LCD is a nice sized 2.7 inches. The zoom control seems to be opposite of what I would have expected, but after spending a little time with it, I'm sure most people get used to it.

Canon Powershot SX10 IS

Canon is one of my personal favorite brands, and this camera is one of the reasons why. This Canon is comparable in price (around $350) to the previously reviewed Panasonic Lumix, but with 20X zoom, instead of just 18. Even a few die hard SLR owners I've hear from, swear from this camera. A lens range of 28-560mm is nothing to sneeze at. Especially with the clarity, and noise free pictures produced by this camera, even at higher ISO settings. You can of course, get better clarity and image sharpness with a good SLR, but your also going to spend at least double the price to get there. Not to mention haul a lot more gear around for a SLR. The other nice thing about this camera, is the ability to capture video files, even if they are in the somewhat more obscure .mov Apple format.

Olympus SP-565 UZ

You should be able to find this Olympus for under $300 these days. Which is pretty good, when you consider the quality of the 20X zoom lens that comes with it. Some would argue, that is the successor to the somewhat botched Olympus SP565UZ. It's a much better camera, a little bit lighter, and includes both an auto zoom and auto focus feature. The zoom is a joy to work with, and the somewhat advance features of face recognition, and shadow adjustments work as advertised. It's got a cool feature call pre-capture, that I suppose, is the poor mans answer to burst mode offered by many high priced SLRs. It basically allows you to capture up to 10 photos in rapid succession, and then choose the ones you want to keep.

Why is it hot? Well, because it's the only lens on the market offering such a huge zoom range, with fast autofocus action and even a VR mechanism that helps you get steady shots without the use of flash. You'll appreciate how useful the VR is if you're in a museum that doesn't allow you to use flash and tripods - the new version of the VR technology Nikon made available on this lens allows you to eliminate handshake at ever slower shutter speeds which beats out the VR capability in more expensive, but older lenses. $750 is all you need to own this lens which you can take 90% of your shots with.

So, there you have it, the lowdown on which lens to get for your D80. Are there better lenses to be had? Never Buy A Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera

The Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera has been on a multitude of top ten lists and received numerous five star ratings. But, every camera has it's quirks and some of them can be quite glaring. Then Nikon D40 is no exception. They say there's no such thing as a bad camera, only bad photographers. I'd like to take that a bit further, and say that there's no such thing as a bad photographer, only good photographers using the wrong camera. So, let's be a little critical with the D40 SLR, and see if it's really the right camera for you.

The most obvious shortcoming of the Nikon D40 camera, is the absence of an autofocus driver in the camera body. What this means, is that if autofocus is important to the way you take pictures, they you are somewhat limited in the number of lenses you can use with the D40. Only about ten percent of the available lenses for the Nikon D40 have autofocus drives built into the lenses. Needless to say, those lenses are considerably more expensive than lenses without autofocus (upwards of $500 or more). Autofocus would be important to anyone shooting shots with lots of movement, such as sports or wildlife.

Nikon decided that a depth of field preview feature was not necessary for the D40. Depending on your preference for taking pictures, this may or may not be of concern. Some photographers find this very helpful, but others may just experiment with different aperture settings and figure out from that what stays in focus, and what doesn't. I would suggest, that someone learning photography could really benefit from a depth of field preview as it helps to teach the principles of objects in focus anddefocused.

One last small grievance. Most SLR's in this price range, allow you to take pictures in the RAW format, and the D40 is no exception. What is a bit surprising, is that when you take pictures with the RAW and JPEG format at the same time, the D40 only uses a very basic JPEG format. For a camera in this price range I would have expected better. Again, your photo taking preferences come into play here. If all you ever take is only RAW, or only JPEG format pictures, then don't concern yourself with this issue.

Capture Perfect Digital Sports and Action Shots - Digital Photography Tips Complementary Guide

What gets you all excited about your favourite sport?... the thrill of the chase in horse racing or maybe the atmosphere and tension of a ball game, maybe your favourite player?... Well if you were to capture some of these scenes how would you do it best? For some digital photography tips, let's take a look at a few ideas right now to capture that realism...

Get Familiar

It's worth getting familiar with the sport before you start shooting, for example, how points are scored, what causes penalties etc, as this will give you an advantage over others... you will learn to expect where the best action is likely to be, and you can then capture those glorious moments.

Another great tip, as well as aiming to catch the action, capture the 'emotion' too. Be ready to shoot players' faces on triumph of a goal, or any other emotive action in the game and you will bring your photos alive!

Be Prepared

Cold and bad weather conditions can quickly rob the life of your digital camera's battery, so it's important to always carry an extra charged battery especially for outdoor sports.

Action Techniques

Stop Action... you'll very quickly be able to shoot an action shot and 'freeze' your subject practically in mid air. Imagine the wheels of a drag car on a dirt road, bouncing off the many bumps... for those few seconds while the car is in mid air, snap away to capture the action.

Lighting is not too much of an issue if you're outside on a sunny or partially sunny day say at a car race, dog track, or horse race etc, but you'll maybe need to make adjustments if you're inside a gymnasium shooting a basketball game, for example. If the lighting is bright, then you'll probably be okay, but depending on the type of lighting, you may need to activate your fill flash if you shoot players in action and you find your photo colorizations shifting to 'yellow'.

Also bear in mind the distance, as your flash will not carry too far... it might be worth sitting near the basket hoop to catch the action!

Blurred Action... a couple of ideas behind blurred action is, firstly... if you look back at your photos you have taken using Stop Action, you may find one or two shots that did not freeze the action, which means your camera did not catch the action at the right moment... so you end up with an interestingly blurry effect to your subject.

Secondly, if you're shooting a ball game, for example, you may get blurring if your player moves just as you click your shutter. If you did not intend for this to happen, you might be pleasantly surprised with the effect!

Panned Action... the most difficult to accomplish, but probably the most effective shooting technique, once mastered. The advantage using your digital camera is that you can delete unwanted frames and start again, so here's how panning basically works...

Using your digital camera in automatic mode press the shutter half way down to focus on your subject, moving your camera sideways following the action, then pressing the shutter fully while still moving your camera. The effect created is the front of your subject should remain in fairly strong focus, while the back of your subject should start to blur, and as it blurs a long trail should appear, giving a feeling of movement like no other effect could possibly achieve.

Experiment

By knowing what your digital camera can do, experiment with different methods to get the best shots. You could try shooting in continuous mode, then try panning the camera along with your subject, whilst he/she or it is in motion.

Using Expensive SLR Cameras at Weddings

Most people see someone carrying expensive SLR cameras at weddings and are immediately struck by a sense of awe and respect, getting out of their way to let them take pictures of anything they like. SLR cameras have a distinctive look; the large barrel, the popup flash. They look like they mean business, unlike the slim point and shoot cameras that are designed to fit as much ability as possible into your pocket.

I own both an SLR and a point and shoot. Personally, I find that with a good enough point and shoot camera, the knowledge of how to use the manual settings is all I really need to produce a picture as good as one taken with the SLR. In some cases the picture may even turn out better, because my point and shoot has auto-focus and anti-shake technology built in. The limited ability to change exposure and aperture manually even helps, because it refuses to allow me to use a setting that will create an overly dim or overly bright picture.

Together, this means I can focus on creating the best frame and composition for each picture without worrying about whether it will turn out blurred, too dark, or too bright. With my SLR, I find myself taking the same picture over and over, adjusting settings minutely each time. Of course, given enough time and a tripod, say with a landscape scene, I can adjust everything until it produces an absolutely gorgeous picture. But in a wedding, where every moment is special and only occurs for an instant, I simply cannot afford the time to adjust my settings between each shot. It's a balance between leaving the camera on one setting and hoping it works for every shot I take, and risking missing out on something important as I adjust exposure and aperture. With a point and shoot camera, I let the camera worry about the basic settings, trusting it to adjust for light for me, and focus on capturing the events of the day in the best composition I can.

Besides, I would believe most brides would care more about the photographer catching the absolute joy on their face as they say "I do", than about how exact the light balance is in the background, as long as it is not completely wrong. The point and shoot camera can guarantee that my backgrounds will always look alright.

So why do so many camera companies sell the idea that an SLR is better than a point and shoot? For that matter, why do I own both? Well, as I said, when taking photographs of things that are not going to change significantly in the next 5 minutes, such as flowers or even models in a photoshoot, I can spend time fiddling with settings and produce National Geographic-worthy pictures. It's also far better when I want to take artistic shots or play with focal lengths and perspectives, because I can force the camera into settings a point and shoot will never allow, creating all kinds of interesting and unusual pictures. Every once in a while one of these pictures will be stunningly beautiful and artistic. But at an event where every moment is different yet important, I prefer to use my point and shoot for the reasons I detailed above.

Camera companies are not completely wrong to say an SLR is better than a point and shoot. The SLR has the potential to produce pictures of amazing quality, perspective and artistry that the point and shoot will only be able to imitate. But that's all it is, a potential. What it comes down to is the ability of the photographer to maximise the ability of his camera. In the hands of someone who knows exactly what setting to use for every shot, every possible scenario, every possible balance of light and shade, a point and shoot can produce better pictures than I can, stumbling around with my SLR.

Canon, Nikon & Sony Prosumer Full-Frame DSLR's

Introduction:

The full frame DSLR market is heating up - by the end of the year three major vendors, Nikon, Canon and Sony, will all have Full Frame ProSumer DSLR's in the market place, all at a similar price point.

The 12.1 megapixel Nikon D700, based on proven technology from both the Nikon D3 and Nikon D300, was announced back in July, and is already available. With an original MSRP of $2,999.95, only 3 months after its announcement street prices have already dropped to around the $2,750 mark.

Rumored for months, the 24.6 megapixel Sony Alpha A900 was finally officially announced on September 9th with an MSRP of $2,999.95, and should be shipping within the next few weeks.

A few days later, Canon announced the 21.1 megapixel Canon EOS 5D Mark II, offering a very comprehensive feature set, as well as adding 1080p HD Video, while undercutting both the Nikon and the Sony with its $2,699.99 MSRP. The camera should ship by the end of the year.

Three very different cameras, all at a very similar price point, make for an interesting choice for the consumer or professional with up to $3,000 to spend on a prosumer DSLR.

Nikon D700:

The Nikon D700 has the excellent year old sensor out of the Nikon D3, in a body comparable to the Nikon D300. With the optional MB-D10 battery pack (which also fits the Nikon D300), the D700 can achieve an impressive 8 f.p.s., while capturing 14-bit files, at least until the buffer fills.

High ISO performance on the D700 is outstanding, equal to the Nikon D3. The Nikon D700 is also has proven Autofocus and Metering. However, it is the lowest resolution camera in the group at only 12 megapixels, and that will turn off a lot of potential buyers.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II:

The 21.1 megapixel sensor has a similar resolution to the flagship Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III, however it has a much broader ISO range. In fact, its ISO range exceeds even the Nikon D3 and D700 at ISO 50-25,600 (vs. ISO 100-25,600 for the Nikons).

The sensor in 5D Mark II is a year newer than the sensor in the D700, and if the low light capabilities come even close to the Nikon D700's, then Canon have a very compelling camera on its hands with a significantly higher resolution over the Nikon. There are very few sample images floating round from the Canon, so it's too early to be sure, but the Canon has a lot of potential - we'll soon see how much difference an extra year of sensor development makes.

The big new feature on the Canon is the 1080p HD Video mode. For many, this feature is a gimmick at best, but for some this is a very powerful tool - the ability to use a significant range of high quality lenses, and have control over depth of field that just doesn't exist on consumer video cameras today. This will be a major selling point for some, and a nice to have for many.

Sony Alpha A900:

The Sony boasts the highest resolution of the three cameras, but falls short in two major areas: Its ISO performance is significantly narrower than its main rivals, and it only boasts 12 bit A/D conversion. For the vast majority of shooters, the 12-bit A/D won't make much, if any real world difference. The problem is more one of perception, a $3,000 full frame DSLR is almost expected to have 14 bit A/D conversion in today's market.

Comparing the Cameras:

You drive up in your new luxury car, and the first question your neighbor asks: "How much horsepower has that thing got?" With cameras, it's megapixels - right or wrong, that's going to be the major selling point for the average consumer, with ISO capabilities a very close second.

In reality, very few photographers need more than 12 megapixels. If you are publishing to the web, 3 megapixels is usually more than sufficient - my large 1920 by 1200 monitor is approximately 2.3 megapixels. A 1080p HD TV is less than 2.1 megapixels.

Most high quality prints are printed at 300 dpi (dots per inch), 150 dpi prints still look very good. At 300dpi, an 8x10 photo requires just over 7 megapixels. A 16x20 print at 150 dpi also requires 7.2 megapixels. How many people who buy these cameras are going to print beyond that?

The main advantage of more megapixels is the ability to crop. This is especially useful for nature, wildlife and sports photographers that need as much reach as possible. What matters to them is pixel density - the more "pixels on target" you can get with your longest lens, the more you can crop and the more effective reach you have. However none of these cameras have the highest pixel density out there - if you need reach, you'd be better served with a Nikon D300 or the new Canon 50D. To get the same pixel density as the Canon 50D in a full frame sensor, you'd need a full frame camera with almost 40 megapixels.

Whether you like it or not, the attribute of the camera that makes the headlines is the megapixel number. From a marketing perspective, that puts the Nikon D700 at a major disadvantage to the Canon 5D Mark II. On paper the Canon also wins in the ISO race, but only just. Until the camera is out there in the marketplace, we won't know for sure just how good its low ISO performance is. The Canon also has 1080p Video, which as stated before, will be a major selling point for some, and irrelevant for others.

Where the Nikon beats the Canon, is about everywhere else that counts: It has a higher maximum frame rate (especially if you add the MB-D10 grip to get 8fps, which more than doubles the Canons), and on paper it also has a superior AF system and metering system. In the same way that having more horsepower is meaningless if the car can't put that power down on the road (think transmission, suspension, tires, traction control), the Nikon D700 is still a very compelling package, especially for those that shoot sport or action.

The Sony A900 wins the megapixel race, but the Canon is very close behind. However it loses badly when you factor in ISO performance. Canon also has a much wider range of very high quality lenses to back up the camera, and offers 14-bit A/D conversion verses 12-bit on the Sony for those looking for ultimate image quality. It also has video support, and is about 10% cheaper, so the Canon effectively makes the Sony A900 a non-starter for most people.

Then it comes back to Nikon versus Canon. Both companies have a large range of professional quality lenses and other accessories to back up the camera. The Nikon is the clear choice for the sports shooter. The landscape or studio photographer will lean towards the extra resolution offered by the Canon. If the ISO performance turns out to be similar for both the Nikon D700 and Canon 5D Mark II, then for the wedding photographer and photo-journalist that need the low light capabilities, the Canon's extra resolution will give it the edge. Unless that is, that they specifically don't want to have to deal with larger image files (takes up more room on memory cards, longer to upload, longer to post process etc).

For everyone else, either the Nikon or Canon should meet or more likely exceed their needs, however Canon has the marketing advantage with the headline number. If you've spent a lot of time shooting in public, then you know someone is going to come up to you at some point and say "Nice camera, how many megapixels has that thing got?"
